Summer Spotlight Author: Rae Lori

This summer, I'm featuring a few of my favorite authors, sharing their thoughts and works with you in hopes you find a favorite of your own. My first spotlight interview with is someone very dear to my heart. More like a sister to me, she has been an inspiration and motivation to me since I've known her.

Author Rae Lori has written comic book and film related articles which have appeared in online publications such as Comic Stack, Suite101, CinemaGap and Dark Moon Rising. As a result, her alma mater's English course chose one of her articles as an example for how to write an article. She also served as editor and contributing writer of her school newsletter.

For her contributions to the newsletter and her leadership, she has won various Success & Leadership awards sponsored by her alma mater where she received her BA in Media Arts & Animation.

Her manuscript, Hotel Sunset, won an Honorable Mention award in the 73rd Annual Writer's Digest Writing Competition. Under various pen names, she has written books, novellas and short stories that run the genre gamut of science fiction, fantasy, short roman noir and paranormal romance and many more waiting to drip onto the page.

A fan of David Lynch and Alfred Hitchcock, she also has a love for film, vampires and visual storytelling which she couples with the art of the written word to tell her stories. While penning her works, she loves to create artwork that explores her strong female characters and the men in their lives.

With a warm, engaging personality, she graciously answered a few questions I had for her:

1. If you could live in any fictional world what would it be?
I would love to live in the Inkheart series. I'm probably a bit biased because I'm reading it at the moment but I love all the talks about books, the ginormous library in Aunt Elinor's home and the fact that these characters can come to life. I saw the movie first and loved it and as an author I could really relate to the fascination in Jim Broadbent's author character seeing his own creations come to life. As a kid, I know I would have eaten that story and movie up like crazy!

2. Which of your heros would you go for? Which of your heroines would you want to be?
Hmm. Well, since I'm working on the sequel at the moment, I would so go for Jace. He's a good bad boy and he has an edge to him that makes him so attractive and exciting. I wouldn't mind being Ariya because of her powers (and plus I love faeries!) but her history and her losses would be heavy for me to take.

3. What has been your motivation to keep writing?
I think knowing that readers out there are enjoying my work and looking for what I'll have next available. When I get a good review or when someone really gets what I was trying to say in my stories, it really pushes me to continue telling the story. Especially if I know there's some heavy stuff for the characters ahead. I try to do my best to entertain.

4. If you could do anything other than write, what would it be?
I would probably be studying psychology and/or teaching. I enjoy sharing what I know with others and I'm really into psychology because of how the mind works. It's so fascinating to me. That coupled with my artwork would be fun.

5. Who has been the biggest influence on your writing style?
Hmm. It's a mixture of my father, Rod Serling and a conglomerate of my favorite sci-fi and fantasy movies and tv I saw growing up. I was so into all these awesome stories told and many of them were timeless, stretching across human nature. My father would steer me in the right direction and give me so many resources for how to write a story that would capture audiences. All of those together really inspired me to make my own stories to entertain.

6. I know you're involved in Second Life--how has that helped your career?
Oh, I really enjoy my time in SL. It took me awhile to find the writing community there but there is such a great enthusiastic group where everyone is working on short stories, novels and poetry. There's readings and classes. I actually got to know more writers and share what I've learned when I was asked to teach a novel writing class there for new and aspiring authors. Some who have never written before. The whole process has been so inspiring and to be in the same boat with other authors on various writing sims doing the same thing as me, I learned a lot of different ways to promote and market my work. And also to check out what publishers have stepped in-world and offered their submission guidelines right there. It's great!

Thanks so much for having me, Lis! :-D
